Suede is highly recommended for beginners. It is not too stingy, not too thuddy and very versatile. It is soft and pettable to the touch. Ball handle floggers are great for people who find traditional handles to be a strain on the wrist or joints, but don't like the loose feeling of finger floggers.
Suede, commonly referred to among leatherworkers as a split, is a layer of leather that has been sliced from the hide like a slice of deli meat would be sliced. Leather hides are very thick and part of the tanning process is to slice them to a useable thinness. These underside layers are "fuzzy" on both sides like the flesh side of a regular piece of leather. They hold vibrant dyes very well and the thicker types of suede, like the cowhide suede used here, make great floggers.
The tails are 20 inches long. The handle is a 3d printed shell full of polyurethane with a steel bolt running throughout to the tails. It's not just a 3d printed handle stuck on top of the tails (honestly wtf who would do that, but apparently people on the interwebs believe that's what's going on because...morons).
